French alternatives to ChatGPT: what to choose for your company

Searching for a "French alternative to ChatGPT" is rarely about finding a better model. ChatGPT is an excellent product, and it keeps improving. What companies typing that query are really after is something else: a tool of the same calibre that does not hand their data to an operator subject to US law.

Why companies look for an alternative

Three reasons come up in conversations with executives and CIOs, and none of them is about model quality.

Above all, Le Chat is still a pooled SaaS: your data sits with Mistral, not with you. For a freelancer or a small team, it is an excellent first step. For a company with governance, isolation and audit requirements, it is not enough on its own.

Albert, the French state's AI

Albert is reserved for public administrations, so it is not an option for your company. Its existence still says something: the French state built its own tool rather than putting its data into services under foreign jurisdiction. The same reasoning applies to your client data.

Self-hosted open-weight models

Mistral releases part of its lineup as open weights, and the strongest open models of the moment are often Chinese, which carries the opposite geopolitical trade-off. Self-hosting is maximum control: the model runs on your infrastructure and nothing leaves.

It is also a full engineering project: GPUs, updates, security, model evaluation. Realistic with a dedicated technical team; unrealistic for a twelve-person firm.

The dedicated instance: owning without building everything

Is ChatGPT banned at work in France?

No, no law bans it. Italy suspended it for a month in 2023, and its data protection authority fined OpenAI 15 million euros in late 2024 (garanteprivacy.it). In France, responsibility for the usage sits with you, and many companies now regulate it internally, precisely because spontaneous use by their teams escapes them.

Is ChatGPT GDPR-compliant?

The question is badly framed: compliance qualifies a processing activity, not a product. OpenAI offers contractual commitments and European data residency on its business plans. One fact remains that no contract changes: the operator is American, and therefore subject to the Cloud Act. Each company must decide whether that risk is acceptable for the data it handles.

Can you put client data into ChatGPT?
